Fastening surcingles and leg straps:

1. Cross surcingles, leaving a width of a hand between the horse’s stomach and the straps.
2. Secure the right leg strap, going between the hind legs to the right Dee ring. Take the left leg strap between the legs and loop it through the right leg strap, then secure it to the Dee ring on the left side.
3. Adjust the leg straps leaving a hand width between the leg and the strap.
4. Adjust the front closures so the blanket is forward enough on the shoulder to allow leg movement without rubbing and the tail flap starts at the top of the tail.

Following these steps ensure the blanket stays securely in place and that the freedom of leg movement is not impaired. A blanket that is not adjusted properly will slide back, rub hair off and cover the tail not allowing the tail to lift freely. Loosely fitted surcingles and leg straps could allow the blanket to shift or legs to get tangled and cause injury to the horse or damage the blanket. If the fit is proper, it should be comfortable, and a horse is also less likely to try to remove it!

Winter Feed Supplements For Horses

With winter here, pastures have died off, and we are feeding more hay.  The essential vitamins and nutrients now missing due to a lack of fresh greens can be replaced with a supplement.  Dulce Seaweed is a great source of replacement nutrients.

Winter also means that most horses will be spending more time in close quarters indoors, leading to higher rates of disease transfer between animals.  Help your horse to fight off those winter bugs by boosting the  immune system.  Garlic,  Vitamin C,  and  Echinacea are excellent immune support supplements.

It is easier to get horses to eat any supplement when sprinkled over feed.  If you feed pellets or oats, you may have to wet the feed to get the herbs to stick.   If your horse is a finicky eater, and seems to not like the herbs, you can add apple cider vinegar to their food, honey, or molasses.  Again, start with a small amount, and when the horse is eating them readily, increase.
